Gemma's first race of her Paralympic career in London in the 200m Individual Medley (SM10) resulted in qualification for the final, where she finished 8th, an achievement that she matched in the 100m Butterfly (S10).
Explaining her love for the sport, Gemma says that she has always enjoyed being in the water but really took to the sport aged four, when she had hydrotherapy following an operation.
Gemma trains at Swansea HPC and is coached by Billy Pye. She describes her greatest achievements to date as winning the bronze medal at the 200m Individual Medley (SM10) at the 2011 IPC European Championships in Berlin, Germany.
Gemma has recently completed her A-Levels at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College where she studied History, Geography and English Literature. Her ambition is to complete her undergraduate History degree at the University of Swansea.
Gemma has bilateral hip dysplasia, meaning that she doesn’t have a fully formed hip joint on both sides and therefore has no support for weight bearing on her legs. This causes reduced leg strength and range of movement.
