Ellie began Swimming with her local Swimming club when she was five years old, and says she was inspired by watching the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games.

She progressed to make her international debut at the 2006 IPC World Championships in Durban, South Africa where she finished 6th in the 400m Freestyle (S6), 7th in the 50m (S6) and 100m Freestyle (S6) and 8th in the 50m Butterfly (S6), before making her Paralympic debut two years later.

Ellie was one of Britain’s most successful swimmers in Beijing where, aged just 13, she brought home two gold medals in the 100m Freestyle (S6) and the 400m Freestyle (S6), making her the youngest ever Briton to win an individual gold medal at a Paralympic Games.

Ellie made a promising start to 2012 when she became the first athlete to set a world record in the Aquatics Centre, winning gold in the 200m Individual Medley (SM6) at the 2012 British Championships in London.

On her second Games appearance at London 2012, Ellie won a medal in each of her four events.

In her first event, the 400m Freestyle (S6), Ellie brought home gold and took more than five seconds from the world record, touching with a time of 5:19.17.

She took her second gold in the 200m Individual Medley (SM6), coming from behind over the final 50 metres of the race to set another world record with a time of 3:05.39.

In the 50m Freestyle (S6) she added a bronze medal to her haul, while in her final event of the Games, the 100m Freestyle (S6) she took silver in a European record time of 1:14.82.

"I knew I would have to give it absolutely everything I've got."Ellie Simmonds

Following the Beijing Games, Ellie became a MBE. In the 2013 New Year's Honours, she was awarded an OBE.

Ellie was also one of three Paralympic athletes nominated for the 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

She has achondroplesia.
