James comes from an athletic background as his elder sister Libby was also selected to compete for ParalympicsGB at London 2012, after winning silver on the Athletics track in Beijing.

During trials for the London 2012 Paralympic Games James broke Ian Sharpe's 12 year-old British record in the S12 classification to win the silver medal in the MC 100m Butterfly at the 2012 British Swimming Championships in the London Aquatics Centre.

At London 2012, James competed in three events with his strongest being the 100m Butterfly (S12). In the morning heats, he became the first British S12 swimmer to go under a minute for the 100m Butterfly as he won his heat, entering the finals as the third fastest qualifier. In the final, he retained this position to take the bronze medal on the same night that his older sister Libby took silver in the T12 100m at the Olympic Stadium.
