Deloitte Ride Across Britain raises magic £1m for the British Paralympic Association
about a year ago
Deloitte Ride Across Britain (Deloitte RAB), the annual Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle challenge, has smashed its target of raising £1m for the British Paralympic Association (BPA), a year earlier than expected. Riders will celebrate hitting the fundraising milestone at an event in Glasgow this evening, before entering the final stages of this year’s 2012 Ride.
The event was launched in 2010 and had already raised £766,000 after the first two years. Now, the inspirational performances of ParalympicsGB at the London 2012 Paralympic Games have helped to tip the fundraising total over the magical £1m mark. The news is a significant boost to the British Paralympic Association which will continue to be the lead benefiting charity for the event in 2013 – resulting in further fundraising as preparations begin for Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016.
Money raised through Deloitte RAB has already had a significant impact on the preparations and performances of British Paralympians, supporting ParalympicsGB stars to achieve great success at this summer’s London 2012 Games. The BPA has used the funding to support the team in a host of ways, guaranteeing our athletes had the best preparation for the home Games, from their training camps through to their support in the Paralympic Village which included a significant medical set up to cater for the diverse needs of the team. London 2012 showed the incredible standard of Paralympic sport, where in many cases breaking a world record was not enough to gain a gold medal. The support of Deloitte RAB helped British athletes to stay ahead of the competition, winning 120 medals.
The Ride continues to go from strength to strength. This year, around 700 riders are tackling the epic challenge, cycling nearly 1000 miles over nine days. This includes around 275 partners, staff and clients of Deloitte.
Riders were given a boost yesterday when star of the Paralympic Games, Sarah Storey, joined the event for the Haydock to Penrith stage. Storey, winner of four cycling golds from London 2012, completed the full challenge in each of the previous two years, using it as part of her training programme and was one of several Paralympic athletes to join Deloitte RAB this year.
Sarah said: “Deloitte RAB has raised an incredible amount of money for the BPA which in turn has enabled the team to be better prepared than ever before. It has allowed ParalympicsGB to capitalise on the home Games, changing attitudes towards disability and encourage more people to get active. I’m so pleased that I was able to join the riders for a stage this year to say thank you on behalf of the team for their incredible efforts.”
Heather Hancock, Deloitte’s lead London 2012 partner said: “I am immensely proud of the contribution made by Deloitte Ride Across Britain in supporting the BPA. It is a great achievement to raise £1m, but to raise it 12 months ahead of schedule is quite special. This demonstrates the passion shared by the Firm and its people in supporting the Paralympic stars of tomorrow. This has been a great year for all those involved in disability sport and we look forward to continuing to work with the BPA to ensure a lasting legacy for disability sport in the UK.”
Tim Hollingsworth, CEO of the BPA said: “The British Paralympic Association would like to thank everyone who has supported us through their participation in the Deloitte Ride Across Britain over the past three years to help us reach this incredible milestone. The money raised has been vital on our journey to London 2012 and helped us to achieve our target of winning more medals across more sports while seeking positively to change perceptions of disability. We have seen a groundswell of support for Paralympic athletes and the money that continues to be raised by Deloitte RAB will help us to carry forward the momentum created by the home Games and ensure the athletes aiming for Sochi, Rio and beyond receive the same preparations as their London counterparts.”
