Competition schedule confirmed for Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

The revised schedule for next summer’s postponed Paralympics Games has today been confirmed by the Tokyo organising committee.

A total of 539 events across 22 sports will take place in the city from August 24 – September 5 2021, beginning with the opening ceremony which takes place on Tuesday 24 August at 8pm local time (12pm BST).

The Izu Velodrome will provide the backdrop for the first medals of the Games to be awarded in the women’s track cycling 3,000 pursuit time trial C1-3, while the opening day of competition will also see medal events take place in swimming and wheelchair fencing.

International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons said: “The announcement of the competition schedule is always a key milestone for all Paralympic Games.

With just over one year to go, Para athletes can now see when they will be competing, and spectators can start to plan which events they either want to attend in person or view on television.

“We are pleased that this schedule has been finalised so quickly following March’s postponement and that it again follows timings that are suitable for a family audience to engage with the Games.”

Expect plenty of excitement on Sunday 29 August when 63 gold medals will be up for grabs, the most from any day throughout the Games, from sports including para athletics, para powerlifting, rowing and triathlon.

History will be made in the closing days of the Games when the first ever taekwondo and badminton Paralympic medallists will be determined, as both sports feature for the first time at the Paralympics.

Taekwondo will see its first Paralympic champion crowned on Thursday 2 September, with the first badminton medals awarded two days later.
