ParalympicsGB confirm world-class training facilities ahead of Tokyo 2020
The British Paralympic Association (BPA) has signed an important agreement with Kawasaki City to use the Todoroki Athletics Stadium in Tokyo, where British track and field athletes will complete their final preparations ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Thanks to the collaboration, British athletes will have access to state-of-the-art preparation facilities and the opportunity to train and acclimatise to the environment in Tokyo when they arrive in August 2020.
Today’s announcement marks an important milestone in the relationship between the BPA and the city of Kawasaki, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2018.
Speaking at the signing ceremony alongside Kawasaki Mayor Fukuda, Mike Sharrock, CEO of the British Paralympic Association, said:
“The athletes who will be holding their final preparations for the Games at the Todoroki athletics stadium in August 2020 will certainly benefit from this world-class facility. We believe passionately that the success of our athletes at the Paralympic Games is what enables us to deliver our vision of ‘through sport, inspire a better world for disabled people’. Today’s signing ceremony is an important step in helping us to deliver that.
“I’d like to thank Mayor Fukuda and his team for their friendship. We are confident that all the athletes who come to Kawasaki next year will feel that warmth and friendship from the people of Kawasaki and for that we are very grateful.”
The preparation model for ParalympicsGB at Tokyo 2020 builds on the successful approach for Rio 2016 where the team won 164 medals, including 64 gold, to finish second in the overall medal table.
