Isaac Towers tuned up for the Para Athletics European Championships with silver in the T34 400 metres at the Berlin Grand Prix.

The Preston athlete represented ParalympicsGB at Rio 2016 over 800 metres, the distance in which he is reigning European champion after winning gold in Grosseto two years ago.

But Towers, who has cerebral palsy, continues to distinguish himself in the one-lap distance, a time of 1:01.12 min enough to secure silver nearly four seconds ahead of bronze.

Towers could unfortunately not beat gold medallist Henry Manni – a long-time rival – who clinched victory at Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Sportpark.

The event, the ninth and final Grand Prix of the season, will give Towers plenty of encouragement as a dry run for the European Championships at the same venue in early August.

Elsewhere, two-time European T35 200m champion Maria Lyle finished sixth in her heat and missed out on a place in the final.
