Wheelchair Curlers beaten by favourites China
Wheelchair Curlers lost to favourites China
ParalympicsGB’s Wheelchair Curling team began Day 6 of competition against reigning World Champions China at the Ice Cube.
The team were playing for pride and to move up the standings after a difficult Day 5 with David Melrose getting injured after falling from his wheelchair and successive defeats to Canada and Republic of Korea ending their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
China are favourites for the gold medal and enjoy vocal support whenever they play but the British team of Skip Hugh Nibloe, Gregor Ewan, Meggan Dawson-Farrell and Gary Smith matched them in the opening ends.
China opened the scoring with one in the first end and the British team scored two with the hammer in the next to edge in front with China responding to make it 2-2 after three ends.
The British team then scored one with a nice draw from Gregor Ewan to lead 3-2 at the halfway stage. China took advantage of the hammer in the fifth to score two to move back in front and they extended their lead to secure their seventh consecutive victory of the round robin stage 6-3.
